About this piece

Black men and women of Bahia and Rio de Janeiro, an original lithograph by J. Honegger from Heinrich Rudolf Schinz's Naturgeschichte und Abbildungen des Menschen der verschiedenen Rassen und Stamme, published in 1845. The sheet is printed in black on white paper, numbered "No. 14" at the top, with the bilingual title below: "Neger u. Negerin v. Bahia, Negerin v. Rio" in German and "Negre et Negresse de Bahia, Negresse de Rio" in French.

Three figures are grouped in a landscape. At the left a man in a striped shirt and a cap sits on a rock with a platter of fish at his feet. In the center a woman in a head wrap and a striped shawl stands with her hands at her waist, and at the right another woman balances a large basket of pineapples and other fruit on her head while carrying a child on her back and a long stick in her hand. The plate is signed "Fuchs del." and "Lith. v. Honegger".

Schinz's work was a large natural history of the human races, and its plates record the costume and occupations of street life in Brazilian cities as seen by European observers.
