About this piece

Two coastal views from Anson's voyage on the Pacific coast of the Americas, an original copper engraving from the Dutch edition of George Anson's Reize rondsom de Werreld, published in 1749. The plate is lettered in Dutch and French beneath each view. The upper view reads "Gezigt van den Berg van Petaplan, en de Rotsen de Witte Broeders" and shows Petatlan mountain on the coast of Mexico with the White Monks rocks off to the right; the lower reads "Gezigt van de Eilanden van Quibo en Quicara" and shows the islands of Coiba and Quicara, in what is now Panama.

Each view is a long, narrow panorama in fine line. In the upper one a ridge of low hills and a high peak rise from the shore, with several rocks and small ships at sea; in the lower, a flat island coast is drawn with a small hill at the left and ships at anchor to the right.

The plates were made to help later navigators identify the coast from the sea.
