About this piece

Indian costume of Michoacán in Mexico, an original lithograph from H. R. Schinz's Naturgeschichte und Abbildungen der Menschen und der Säugethiere, published around 1845. The plate is lettered "Tracht der Indianer von Mechoacon" below the image, with "Lith. v. Honegger" at lower left and the draftsman's credit at lower right, and is numbered 40 in the upper right corner.

A woman and a man stand side by side on a stony path. She wears a blouse with embroidered ruffles at the neck and sleeves, a dark gathered skirt over a lace-trimmed white petticoat and flat sandals, and lifts her skirt slightly with one hand. He wears a long striped tunic belted at the waist, gathered breeches with frilled cuffs and sandals, and holds out one hand as if in conversation. A large agave plant and a clump of trees fill the background.

The printed tint is a soft gray, with the figures carefully modeled in gradations of shading.
