About this piece
Gowanus Heights near Brooklyn, an original steel engraving published around 1850 by the Bibliographisches Institut of Hildburghausen in Meyer's Die Fünf Welttheile dargestellt in Bild & Wort. The sheet is printed in black. The plate title, in German, reads "Die 'Gowanus Heights' bei Brooklyn", with the Hildburghausen imprint and the publisher's property line beneath.
The view looks down a country road lined with tall trees and wooden houses. A horse-drawn cart and several figures stand in the middle ground, and a few more walkers appear farther up the road. Below, a scatter of rooftops marks the settlement, with the water of the harbor opening out behind it and church towers rising on the ridge at the right.
Gowanus lies on the shore of Brooklyn facing New York Bay. The heights above it were the ground of the Battle of Long Island in 1776, so the quiet, half-rural scene shown here recalls a place already known to American readers for its Revolutionary War history, before Brooklyn was built up into a city.
