About this piece
Peru in the viceroyalty of the Spanish Empire, a map titled "Peru" with a long coast on the Pacific, published by Willem and Joan Blaeu in Amsterdam around 1642 in their atlas Toonneel des Aerdrycx. It is an original copper engraving with hand color in red, green and yellow.
The map covers the coast of the Pacific, "Mar del Zur", from near the equator, marked "Linea Aequinoctialis" at the left, down past the Tropic of Capricorn at the right. The Andes run through the interior as rows of pictorial mountains, a large lake lies in the north-east, and the coastline is crowded with ports and place names. Regions of the interior bear such names as Moias, Pacamores and Manca Peru. Three Dutch ships under sail, a pair of sea monsters and a compass rose with a fleur-de-lis north point fill the ocean.
The title is set in a strapwork cartouche at the upper left in a red and purple frame, with a scale bar beneath, and the Blaeu imprint "Guiljelmus Blaeuw excudit" appears at the lower right.
