About this piece
Hudson Bay and the central provinces of Canada, "Dominion of Canada (West Central Sheet)," a color-printed map published in 1903 by W. & A.K. Johnston of Edinburgh and London. The title and scale bars appear at the top, with the cartographer's credit "by T.R. Johnston."
Hudson Bay fills the upper center of the sheet, with the shores of Keewatin and northern Ontario around its western and southern edges and the coast of Labrador at the right. Beneath it the map follows the country south and west: Athabasca, Saskatchewan and Assiniboia are lettered at the left, and Manitoba is outlined in green at the lower left, with Ontario spreading along the bottom right. Lake Winnipeg and the other great lakes of the interior are drawn in blue, as are the very numerous smaller lakes of the Canadian Shield. At the foot of the sheet, the northern shore of Lake Superior and the border with the United States appear, with the Dakotas and Minnesota labeled below it.
Railroads and place names concentrate along the southern edge of the sheet, where settlement lay in 1903, while the north is left sparsely lettered.
