About this piece

A Vanity Fair caricature titled "In the Clouds", published in December 1904, showing Sir Hiram Stevens Maxim, the American-born inventor best known for the Maxim machine gun. The sheet is a chromolithograph signed with the "Spy" monogram and printed by Vincent Brooks, Day & Son.

Maxim stands at full length on a bare floor in a dark pinstriped suit with a white pocket handkerchief. His white hair and beard frame a ruddy face, and he cups one hand to his ear as if straining to hear. Behind him looms a large rounded form in pale blue and pink with dark spots, and fine lines drawn from above, a visual allusion to his work on flight that fits the caption. The Vanity Fair masthead and date appear at the top of the sheet.

Maxim, an inventor who made his career in Britain, was one of many Americans who appear in the magazine's weekly series of caricatures of well-known figures.
