About this piece

An enthroned figure from "Neu Mexiko", an original copper engraving from the German edition of Arnoldus Montanus's Die Unbekante Neue Welt oder Beschreibung des Welt-teils Amerika und des Sud-Landes, published in Amsterdam by Jacob Meurs in 1673. The plate is headed "Neu Meriko" and numbered 248 at the upper right.

A man sits on a raised block in the center, wearing a feathered headdress and necklaces and a long patterned cloth over his knees. In his right hand he holds a feather fan, and in his left a round shield decorated with crossed arrows. Behind him, skulls and bones are hung against a curtained backdrop, and kneeling attendants look on at both sides, with a hillside landscape in the openings at the left and right.

Montanus compiled his account of the Americas from earlier travel writers, and the plates in this edition show how seventeenth-century Europeans pictured the peoples of the New World.
