About this piece
An allegorical celebration of the British victories in America at the close of the French and Indian War, known in Europe as the Seven Years' War, a hand-colored engraving after J. Miller (1763). The sheet carries no title.
Classical figures gather around a large globe, which is turned to show the northeast coast of North America and the Caribbean. They gesture toward America, while a figure of George III in classical dress looks on. At the top an allegorical image of America appears with a map of North America behind her, and angels and a winged messenger fly in the clouds. An angel in the center foreground holds a list of the British conquests of 1761, including Pondicherry, Belle Isle and Dominica, and of 1762, including Martinique, Grenada, St Vincent and St Lucia. The last entry is Havana, August 12. In the left foreground, river gods lean on an urn, and on the right helmeted war gods and armor lie in a heap beneath trees and a ruined arch.
George III came to the throne in 1760 and inherited Britain's part in the Seven Years' War, which ended in 1763 with the Treaty of Paris and the transfer of Canada to Britain.
