About this piece

The Erie Canal near Little Falls, New York, an original steel engraving of about 1850 from the New York publisher Herrmann J. Meyer. The plate title reads "Erie Canal near Little Falls, (New-York)", and the sheet is printed in black.

The view is an evening scene. A canal packet boat with several figures on deck moves along a narrow, calm channel, with a tow rope stretched across the water to the left. In the foreground two riders on horses wait on the towpath, and a flowering bank runs along the edge. A huge crag of rock overhangs the canal on the left, and dense forest covers the hills on the right under a moon half-hidden by cloud. The whole composition is a study in light and shade.

The Erie Canal was opened in 1825 and joined the Hudson to Lake Erie. At Little Falls it passed through a narrow rocky gorge of the Mohawk Valley, which made it one of the more scenic and more difficult stretches of the route.
