About this piece

The water line and shores of an ancient lake in the Colorado Desert, an original tinted lithograph from the Pacific Railroad Surveys, issued in 1856. The caption reads "Water Line and Shores of the Ancient Lake (Colorado Desert)". The header reads "U.S.P.R.R. Exp. & Surveys, Cal." and the sheet is numbered as a Geology plate.

Two mounted men sit at the foreground and one points across a flat, pale basin, with the old shoreline marked as a line along the base of a dark, steep-sided mountain at the right. More low peaks rise out of the haze across the empty basin, and a small party with wagons or pack animals can be seen at the far left. A dead branch lies in the foreground. The tints are soft peach and gray under a pale sky.

The plate was prepared for the geological reports of the California survey. It was published in Reports of Explorations and Surveys, to Ascertain the Most Practicable and Economical Route for a Railroad from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean.
