About this piece

Girard's Bank in Philadelphia, an original steel engraving published in Germany around 1850. The sheet is printed in black. The plate title reads "Girard's-Bank in Philadelphia", with the imprint of the Bibliographisches Institut of Hildburghausen and the publisher's property line in the lower margin.

The bank stands at the center of a small open square, a classical building with a pedimented portico of tall columns. At the right a brick house with dormer windows and a cart in front of it faces the building, and at the left, a tree and a row of houses frame the scene. Small figures in the street, a dog in the foreground, and a few men on the steps give the square its scale.

The building was put up as the First Bank of the United States and was bought by Stephen Girard in 1812, after which it did business as Girard's Bank. It stands on Third Street in Philadelphia.
