About this piece

The healing and funeral customs of the Paria Indians, a copperplate engraving of 1734 from Les Cérémonies et Coutumes Religieuses de tous les Peuples du Monde, engraved by Bernard Picart. Two scenes appear on one sheet.

The upper scene is lettered "Manière dont les Sauvages de Paria guérissent leurs Malades". Women and men lower a sick person into a river beside a thatched hut, while a litter is carried at the left and a group dances around a fire at the right. The lower scene, "Danse des Sauvages de Paria autour des Mourans, et leurs Cérémonies Funèbres", shows figures lowering a body into a trench, others pouring offerings, and a ring of dancers under large trees in the background.

Paria is the coastal region of northeastern Venezuela. The engraver composes the scenes from travelers' reports in the classical, figure-based manner of the series.
