About this piece
The international rifle match between American and Irish teams at Dollymount, near Dublin, an original wood engraving with hand color from The Illustrated London News, 1875. The caption beneath the image reads "The International Rifle-Match between American and Irish Teams, at Dollymount, near Dublin".
The view is a crowded firing line on the grass by the shore. In the foreground a rifleman in a red cap lies prone with his barrel pointing to the right, while behind him men in coats and brimmed hats sit or kneel at tripod-mounted spotting telescopes, a second marksman lies flat further back, and several others stand with rifles at the ready. Small wooden boards in the grass mark the firing points. Behind them, a large crowd of spectators in top hats and bowlers fills the middle distance, with tall tripod frames and canvas tents under a row of pennants, and a tall pole at the right flies the American flag. The sky is pale with streaks of cloud, and a low line of hills closes the horizon.
The engraving is one of the sporting subjects of the 1870s that turned long-range rifle shooting into an international contest, and it shows the rifles, telescopes and tents of a match meeting as they were arranged in that decade.
