About this piece
North America at the start of the nineteenth century, an original hand-colored copper engraving published in Vienna in 1806. The title, in German, reads "Nord America mit Benützung der neuesten und zuverlässigsten Quellen und Hülfsmittel", and the map was made after the design of Joseph Marx Freiherr von Liechtenstern (1765-1828), drawn and engraved by Martin Hartl.
The sheet covers the whole continent, from Alaska and the Arctic coast at upper left to Greenland at upper right, and from Hudson Bay and the Great Lakes down through the United States and Mexico to Central America, Cuba and the Caribbean islands, with the northern edge of South America at the lower right. Territories are colored by possession, with a color key at the left edge. The title cartouche stands at lower left, and the whole map sits within a yellow-banded graduated frame. Ocean names are in German, including "Das Grosse Weltmeer" for the Pacific and "Das Atlantische Meer".
The date places the map just after the Louisiana Purchase of 1803 and during the Lewis and Clark Expedition of 1804 to 1806. The western interior is still thinly drawn, with large areas left almost empty of detail.
