About this piece
The Western Hemisphere in a single sheet, an original hand-colored copper engraving titled "America entworfen und gezeichnet von C. F. Weiland", drawn by Carl Ferdinand Weiland (1782-1847) and published at Weimar by the Geographisches Institut in 1826.
North and South America run in a long diagonal across the sheet, from Greenland and the Arctic coasts at the top through Canada, the United States, Mexico and Central America to the Caribbean and the southern tip of the continent. Political divisions are tinted in color, and a key at lower left identifies the possessions of the different powers, with a graphic scale beneath it. The ocean names are German and lettered in large spaced capitals along the margins, among them "Das Stille Meer oder der Australocean" for the Pacific and the Atlantic. A repeating ornamental band forms the border.
The date is significant for the southern half of the map. By 1826 Brazil and the former Spanish colonies of South America had become independent states, and the sheet shows the continent divided into the new political units alongside the territories that remained in European hands.
