About this piece
Southern South America, "South America (Southern Sheet)" by Keith Johnston, a color-printed map published in 1903 by W. & A.K. Johnston, Limited, of Edinburgh and London. The title and scales are lettered at the lower right.
The sheet follows the cone of the continent from the Tropic of Capricorn to Cape Horn. Chile runs as a narrow strip down the Pacific side, its broken southern coast and the islands of Tierra del Fuego drawn out to the Straits of Magellan. Argentina fills the middle with Uruguay and the southern edge of Brazil on the Atlantic side, and part of Paraguay at the top. National boundaries and provinces are tinted in color, with the Andes shown in hachures, and rivers and railroads are traced across the plains. Out in the South Atlantic, the Falkland Islands appear at the foot and South Georgia is placed in the lower right corner, while islands in the South Pacific are shown at the left.
This is a companion to the Northern Sheet in the same atlas, and together they cover the continent at about the same scale.
