About this piece

Marriage and infant ceremonies of the Mexicans, a copperplate engraving of 1734 from Les Cérémonies et Coutumes Religieuses de tous les Peuples du Monde, engraved after designs by Bernard Picart (Tome VI, plate 91). Two scenes appear on one sheet.

In the upper scene, "Mariage des Mexicains", a bride and groom are joined by a priest on a stepped platform before a balustrade and a town of European-style buildings. The wedding party wears feathered cloaks and headdresses, and women on the right hold small children. The lower scene, "Cérémonies que les Mexicains pratiquent à l'égard de leurs Enfans", shows an enthroned figure holding a shield and priests lifting infants over an altar, with a chest of offerings in the corner and a crowd of women waiting at the back of the room.

The Cérémonies et Coutumes was a European picture-book of the religions of the world, and Picart's Mexican scenes follow written accounts of Aztec customs.
