About this piece
A landscape view of Moyobamba, an original nineteenth-century pencil drawing on paper, dated about 1850 and mounted on an old paper backing. This is a drawing, not a print. The artist is not identified, and the title is written in pencil beneath the image, beginning with "Moyobamba" and followed by words naming the river.
The view looks across a low, scrubby foreground to a pale ridge of eroded bluffs, with scattered buildings along its crest and a larger rounded hill behind. A smaller dark peak rises at the left under a softly shaded sky. Two figures walk along a path at the right, one carrying a bundle of branches. The shading is fine and graduated, and the open ground in the middle distance is left almost blank.
Moyobamba, in northern Peru, was founded in the sixteenth century and became a gateway to the Amazon basin. Nineteenth-century travelers and naturalists passed through it, and drawings of this type recorded views before photography became common.
