About this piece
A plate on Peru from Henri Abraham Chatelain's Atlas Historique, an original engraving published in Amsterdam around 1719. The long French title across the top reads "Carte Particulière du Pérou, Plan de la Ville de Lima, Description de quelques Plantes, Animaux, & Machines du Pays, Avec l'Habillement des Hommes & des Femmes Espagnoles qui y Demeurent".
The sheet combines several images with text. At the center top is the regional map of Peru, with its coast on the Pacific and the interior lettered "Provinces des Amazones". To its left, an engraved vignette shows a llama and plants with local machines, and to its right a domestic interior with Spanish men and women in the dress of the colony. Across the lower half, the French "Description de Lima" runs in columns around a plan of the city, laid out in a regular grid beside the river.
Chatelain (1684 to 1743), a Huguenot publisher in Amsterdam, built his atlas around such sheets, joining maps with illustrations and explanatory text on geography, trade and natural history.
