About this piece
Bolivia, an original hand-colored print of 1843 from the work of Captain Gabriel-Pierre Lafond, Voyages autour du monde et naufrages célèbres, engraved by Collignon. The sheet is lettered "Bolivia" with a caption beneath that refers to women of Chuquisaca, and the series title appears at the right.
Two women and a man are grouped in the foreground, standing on a path with a rocky mountain and palm fronds behind them. The woman at the left, seen from behind, wears a red bodice, a blue skirt banded with red and white, and long braids tied with ribbons. The woman at the center, in a pale yellow patterned dress with a necklace, carries a basket of fruit. The man at the right wears a wide-brimmed yellow hat and a poncho patterned with bold stripes and circles. The costumes are rendered in clear, bright colors.
Lafond's work, published in Paris in the 1840s, described voyages round the world and was illustrated with plates of the peoples of the lands visited.
