About this piece
Yuracaré people fishing in a tropical river, an original hand-colored lithograph titled "Pêche des Yuracarès (Pérou)", drawn and engraved by Dureau ("Dureau del. et Sculp.") and printed in Paris by Gilquin et Dupain. The publisher is lettered below as Dufour, Mulat et Boulanger, and the date is about 1840.
The scene is a broad, shallow river bordered by dense forest. Five men stand in the water in loincloths, holding long poles or spears, with lines stretched across the stream, apparently to funnel the fish. Two women and a seated child sit on the near bank at the right, one carrying a vessel on her head, and fish are laid out at the water's edge. Palms, broad-leaved plants and a large spreading tree rise behind, with rocks at the left and wooded hills in the distance under a cloudy sky. The coloring is in strong greens and yellows, with red on some of the figures.
The Yuracaré are an Indigenous people of the forested foothills of the upper Amazon basin, and prints of this kind were issued for European readers of travel and geography.
