About this piece
The mining mountain of Hualgayoc in northern Peru, a lithograph from Mariano Felipe Paz Soldán's Atlas Geográfico de la República del Perú, published in Paris in 1865. The plate is lettered "Cerro Mineral de Hualgayoc" beneath the image, with "Paz Soldán" at the upper left and "Geografía del Perú, Pl. X" at the upper right. It is printed in tones of sepia on cream paper, with the artist and printers' credits (F. Delamare, drawn; H. Jacomme, printed) below the image.
A rocky, steep-sided peak fills the center of the plate, with a winding track cut up its flank, and the roofs of the mining town cluster at its foot in the lower left. Ridges recede into the distance on the left, and a broad sky with clouds fills the upper half.
Hualgayoc lies in the Cajamarca region and was known for its silver mines. The plate is one of the series of lithographed views of cities and landscapes that Paz Soldán included in his atlas, and it shows the mountain and the town below it in the 1860s.
