About this piece
Sacramento City in the early Gold Rush years, an original steel engraving from Meyers Universum, published by the Bibliographisches Institut in Germany around 1850. The plate is printed in black and lettered below the image "Sacramento-City in Californien."
The view looks across the Sacramento River to the levee. Sailing ships with tall masts and a paddle-wheel steamer lie moored along the waterfront, with small boats among them, and the bank is crowded with cargo, wagons and figures. Beyond, a broad street runs inland between low wooden buildings and warehouses, with tents at the left edge and tall trees scattered through the settlement, and the distant Sierra foothills appear along the horizon.
Sacramento was the main supply point for the gold fields after the discovery of gold in California in 1848. Steamboats and sailing vessels carried goods and passengers up from San Francisco Bay to its levee, and this plate shows the town while it was still new and largely wooden.
