About this piece

Scenery on the San Juan River in Central America, an original steel engraving published around 1850 by the Bibliographisches Institut of Hildburghausen, whose imprint is in the lower margin. The sheet is printed in black. The plate title reads "Szenerie auf dem San Juan in Central-America".

The view looks across the broad, calm river toward a high bank thick with vegetation. A huge tree in the left foreground is draped with hanging vines, and palms rise above the wooded bluff behind it, with tall feathery trees at the top. A small boat with a figure in it crosses the open water, and the far shore lies low and flat under a cloudy sky, with distant rain or smoke on the horizon. Reeds and marsh grasses edge the near bank.

The San Juan flows from Lake Nicaragua to the Caribbean and forms part of the border between Nicaragua and Costa Rica. In the middle of the nineteenth century its route across Nicaragua was much discussed as a way between the oceans.
