About this piece
Savannah on the Mosquito Coast, an original steel engraving published around 1850 by the Bibliographisches Institut of Hildburghausen, which is named in the imprint in the lower margin. The sheet is printed in black, and the plate title reads "Savannah (Mosquito)". A pencil note beneath the title adds "Honduras, Central-Amer."
The view looks across an open grassland, with a large conifer-like tree and bushes in the left foreground. In the middle distance a mounted herdsman, one arm raised, drives a small herd of cattle across the plain, while more cattle graze beyond. Scattered trees mark the far side of the flat ground, and ranges of low mountains rise against a sky of heavy cloud.
The Mosquito Coast is the Caribbean shore of eastern Honduras and Nicaragua. The grassland, cattle and rider make this a scene of ranching country, drawn for European readers of the series.
