About this piece

A group of figures labeled as Chile ("Chili") in an original copper engraving from the German edition of Arnoldus Montanus's Die Unbekante Neue Welt oder Beschreibung des Welt-teils Amerika und des Sud-Landes, published in Amsterdam by Jacob Meurs in 1673.

In the center, a man in a long striped tunic stands with a club on his shoulder and one hand held out, and a woman at the left, in a similar striped garment and with her hair arranged in ringlets, faces him with her hand open. Between them, a crouching woman with a child on her back holds a stick, and two further figures at the right wear cloaks and carry a basket and a jug. Small tent-like huts and a palm tree stand in the background, and a rocky hill rises behind with a tiny figure walking on its slope.

Montanus compiled his account of the Americas from earlier travel writers, and the plates in this edition show how seventeenth-century Europeans pictured the peoples of the New World.
