About this piece
Mountains Near the Entrance of the Canada de las Uvas, a tinted lithograph of 1856 from the Pacific Railroad Surveys, the government reports of explorations for a railroad route from the Mississippi to the Pacific. The legend at the upper left reads "U.S.P.R.R. Exp. & Surveys," the plate number VII appears at the upper right, the draftsman is credited at the lower left and the lithographer at the lower right, and the title is lettered below the image.
The view looks across a wide, empty plain to a long range of bare, rounded hills, drawn in soft shades of buff and gray. A few low mounds and huts stand in the middle distance, a lone rider crosses the plain, and in the foreground two figures with staffs rest on a bank of dry ground. The sheet gives a sense of the scale of the country the survey parties crossed, with almost no trees or settlements.
The Canada de las Uvas, the Cañada de las Uvas or Grape Vine Canyon, lies in the mountains south of the San Joaquin Valley in California, on the approaches to the Tejon Pass, where several of the survey parties examined passes through the Coast Ranges.
