About this piece
Two plates of geological cross-sections, original chromolithographs from "Naturgeschichte des Mineralreichs für Schule und Haus", published in 1888 by J. F. Schreiber at Esslingen near Stuttgart. The set is Plates I and II of the geology section, in the fourth improved edition of the work by Dr. Friedrich Rolle.
Plate I is an idealized section through a slice of the Earth's crust. Colored strata stack up in successive geological periods, folded and broken by faults, with intrusive masses and volcanic vents rising through them. A vertical sequence at the left accompanies the main diagram, and the key below is lettered in German.
Plate II groups eight smaller sections of named landscapes, each lettered with its own legend. They include the Harz, the Thuringian Forest, the Erzgebirge, the Riesengebirge, the Black Forest and the Eisack valley in South Tyrol, together with a north to south section of Vesuvius and a section across the land between Lake Erie and Lake Ontario at Niagara Falls.
Apart from the Niagara section, the subjects are European, so the pair is chiefly of interest for the history of geological teaching in the later nineteenth century.
