About this piece
Two sporting dogs in profile, a Gordon Setter and an English Setter, a vintage color print titled "Setters" and signed in pencil by Paul Wood, issued in New York in the 1930s. The title is written in pencil at the lower left, and a printed copyright line at the upper right gives New York, U.S.A.
The two heads are drawn close together against a pale, softly shaded ground. The Gordon Setter in front is black with chestnut markings on the muzzle and chest, and the English Setter behind it is white, flecked with black and wearing a brown collar. The fur is built up in fine line and soft tone, and the sheet has a blind plate mark around the image.
Paul Wood produced a series of dog portraits of sporting breeds, and prints of this kind were made for people who owned and worked these dogs.
