About this piece
Spanish American girl from Concepción, Chile, an original hand-colored lithograph of about 1852 from a nineteenth-century costume series in Dutch. The plate is lettered "Spaansch Amerikaansch Meisje van het Eiland Conception (Chili)" (a Spanish American girl from the island of Conception, Chile) beneath the figure.
The young woman stands full length on a small patch of ground, her dark hair drawn back in ringlets, with a red bead necklace at her throat. A plaid shawl in pink and purple is wrapped around her shoulders, and in one hand she holds a folded yellow fan. Her wide white skirt is scattered with small yellow floral motifs and finished with a band at the hem, and she wears striped stockings and small red shoes. The coloring is applied by hand over the lithographed outline, with the shawl as the strongest note.
The Dutch caption places her on the "island" of Conception; the town of Concepción lies on the Chilean mainland coast. Plates of this kind showed European readers the dress of the peoples of Spanish America, and the wide margins leave the single figure alone on the sheet.
