About this piece
The Starucca Viaduct of the Erie Railroad, an original steel engraving published around 1850 by the Bibliographisches Institut of Hildburghausen, as named in the imprint in the lower margin. The sheet is printed in black. The German plate title reads "Starucca Viaduct, Erie-Eisenbahn im Staate New-York".
A long stone viaduct of tall round arches crosses the whole width of the valley, with a steam locomotive and its train, trailing smoke, running along the top. Below it, in the foreground, a small log building with a smoking chimney stands beside a pond, a wagon crosses a timber bridge, felled logs lie on the bank, and a lone figure stands in the foreground. Wooded hills rise behind the arches.
The viaduct was built in 1847 and 1848 at Lanesboro, in Susquehanna County, Pennsylvania, near the New York border, and carried the Erie Railroad over Starucca Creek. The German title places it in the state of New York, but the structure stands in Pennsylvania.
