About this piece
British America, a decorative map by John Tallis and Company, an original steel engraving with hand-colored outlines from John Howard Hinton's The History and Topography of the United States of America, published in London and New York, circa 1850. The title "British America" is set in the ornamental border at the top, which is filled with a finely worked pattern of scrolls and medallions.
The map covers British North America from the Pacific to Greenland, with the provinces and territories outlined in pink and yellow: the Hudson's Bay territories, Canada, the Maritime provinces, Labrador and the Arctic coasts, with the northern United States along the lower edge. Vignettes fill the corners and the margins: Esquimaux beside a tent at the upper left, the ships Fury and Hecla at the top, a polar bear at the upper right, whale fishing at the right, a seal at the lower right, and a view of Montreal at the lower center.
The map shows Canada in the years before Confederation.
