About this piece
East Canada and New Brunswick, a decorative map by John Tallis and Company, an original steel engraving with hand-colored outlines from John Howard Hinton's The History and Topography of the United States of America, published in London and New York, circa 1850. The title "East Canada, and New Brunswick" is set in the ornamental scrollwork border at the top.
The map covers what is now southern Quebec and New Brunswick, along the St. Lawrence River and the Gulf of St. Lawrence, with the river counties and seigneuries, rivers, lakes and towns marked in fine detail. Vignettes fill the empty spaces: a view of Quebec from the river, with its citadel on the cliff and ships and small boats in the foreground, appears at the upper left; a group of North American Indians sitting among rocks is shown at the center; and a bison stands at the lower right. A small animal appears at the left edge. The credits at the foot name the illustrations as drawn by H. Warren, and the map as drawn and engraved by J. Rapkin.
Tallis maps are admired for their rich decoration.
