About this piece
North America on a map from The Royal Atlas of Modern Geography, by Alexander Keith Johnston, published by W. & A.K. Johnston in 1882. The sheet is engraved and tinted by region, with the title "North America" and the scales at lower left.
The map shows the whole continent in one view, from Greenland and the Arctic islands at the top to Panama at the foot. British America and the United States are outlined in different colors across the middle, with the Great Lakes, the Mississippi, the Rocky Mountains and the Pacific coast drawn in detail, and Mexico and Central America extend south to the bottom. A small inset sits at the left edge. The West India Islands and the Gulf of Mexico fill the lower right, and the coastlines are lettered with ports and capes.
The sheet is a general map of the continent, the overview within the atlas's regional coverage of North America.
