About this piece
North America on a single sheet, an original engraved map titled "North America", published by Blackie & Son of Glasgow, Edinburgh and London, about 1860. The sheet carries a plate number at the upper right and is hand colored in outline for the countries and colonies.
The map shows the whole continent from the Arctic Ocean to Central America, with Greenland at the upper right and part of the West Indies at the lower right. British North America is outlined in pink, the United States in green and Mexico in orange, with the small states of Central America beside it. The Great Lakes, the Mississippi system, the Rocky Mountains and the Gulf of Mexico are all drawn, and towns, rivers and coasts are lettered throughout. In the northwest, Alaska runs out into the Pacific, and Hudson Bay and the Arctic islands are filled in at the top.
The date places the map just before the Civil War, with the United States already reaching the Pacific after the Mexican cession of 1848, and with British North America still divided into separate colonies before Confederation in 1867.
