About this piece
North America from a mid-nineteenth century Dutch school atlas, titled "Noord-Amerika", from Otto Petri's School-Atlas van alle deelen der Aarde, published in Rotterdam by A. Baedeker in 1852. The map is a lithograph with hand outline color.
The continent is drawn on a curved projection with the title in a framed cartouche at the lower left, which also gives the imprint "Rotterdam, bij A. Baedeker (Otto Petri)". Beneath it, a numbered key lists the "Vereenigde Staten", Mexico and "Midden Amerika" in separate columns, matching colored numerals on the map. The United States is outlined in red and orange, British North America in yellow, Mexico in green and Central America in blue, and the western territories are marked in large letters, including California. Russian America appears at the upper left. The oceans are lettered "Stille Zee", "Atlantische Zee" and "Caraïbische Zee", and the Gulf of Mexico is named "Golf van Mexico".
The date, 1852, falls just after the Mexican Cession and the California gold rush, and the sheet shows the enlarged United States in a way unchanged by later boundaries.
