About this piece
New Spain and New Galicia, an original hand-colored map engraved and published by Johannes Janssonius in Amsterdam around 1650. The title, "Nova Hispania, et Nova Galicia", is lettered in a large cartouche at the upper right. The map is an engraving with hand color.
The sheet covers the central and western part of Mexico, from the Pacific coast to the Gulf side and from the north of New Galicia down toward the southern coast. Mexico City is marked beside its lake at the right of center, with the surrounding provinces, towns, rivers and mountain ranges lettered across the sheet, and the Pacific coast is drawn in detail along the left. Provincial boundaries are picked out in color.
The cartouche is a baroque frame with the royal Spanish arms under a crowned eagle, flanked by two allegorical figures. A sailing ship and a sea monster appear in the Pacific at lower left beside large swash lettering naming the sea, and a decorated cartouche at the lower right holds a legend and scale, with a small putto and animals beside it.
Dutch atlas publishers of the mid-seventeenth century, among them Janssonius and the Blaeu family, issued maps of this kind for sale as part of their atlases.
