About this piece
Eastern Canada on Alexander Keith Johnston's "Province of Canada (Eastern Sheet)," an original map from his Royal Atlas of Modern Geography, published by William Blackwood and Sons, Edinburgh and London, in 1865. The sheet is numbered 48 at the upper right and carries the atlas heading "Keith Johnston's General Atlas." The title block lists New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward and Cape Breton Islands and Newfoundland.
The main map covers the lower Saint Lawrence and the Gulf of Saint Lawrence, the Gaspe coast, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Cape Breton, and Prince Edward Island, with Anticosti Island in the gulf, and part of Maine at the lower left. Rivers, lakes, county boundaries and coastal soundings are traced in fine detail, with provincial borders in outline color. A large inset on the right gives Newfoundland on its own scale, with its deeply indented coast and interior lakes.
The sheet shows the eastern provinces just before Confederation in 1867, when the Province of Canada and the Maritime colonies were still separate. Johnston's atlas plates are known for their precise engraving and clean lettering.
