About this piece
West Canada, a decorative map by John Tallis and Company, an original steel engraving with hand-colored outlines from John Howard Hinton's The History and Topography of the United States of America, published in London and New York, circa 1850. The title "West Canada" is set in the ornamental scroll border at the top.
The map covers what is now southern Ontario, between Lakes Huron, Erie and Ontario, with counties and townships outlined in color and rivers, roads and towns marked in fine detail, as far as the Ottawa River. Vignettes fill the empty spaces. A view of the Falls of Niagara at the lower right, with its title below, shows the cataract and the wooded banks; a buffalo hunt on horseback is drawn at the upper left, a camp scene at the left, and a seal-like animal and a smaller creature at the top. The credits at the foot name the map as drawn and engraved by J. Rapkin.
West Canada was the name for the western half of the Province of Canada, and later became Ontario.
