About this piece
Amerika, a small Dutch map of the two Americas, engraved by Daniel Veelwaard Junior for N. G. van Kampen's De Aarde, beschouwd in haren Natuurlijken Toestand en Verdeeling and published by Erven F. Bohn in Haarlem in 1841. The sheet has original hand coloring, and the title "Amerika" appears in an oval cartouche at the lower right.
North America is washed in green, South America in pink, Greenland in orange, and the neighboring edges of Europe and Africa in green and yellow. The meridians curve across the sheet in a conical grid, and the oceans are lettered in Dutch as "Stille Zee," "Atlantische Zee" and "Zuid Zee." Hudson Bay, Labrador and the Gulf of Mexico appear in the north, with the Caribbean islands strung between the continents. Louisiana, New Mexico, the colonial names of the eastern seaboard and the Spanish and Portuguese territories of the south are lettered in small italics. The map is framed with a red and yellow border.
Veelwaard Junior (1796 to 1868) was a Dutch map engraver, and a pupil of his father. The map is a compact general view of the Americas as taught to Dutch readers of the 1840s.
