About this piece
North America in 1903, a color-printed map of the whole continent by Keith Johnston, engraved, printed and published by W. & A.K. Johnston of Edinburgh and London. The title "North America" appears at the lower left, with three scale bars set beneath it.
The sheet covers the continent from the Arctic islands and Greenland in the north to Panama in the south. Canada, the United States and Mexico are separated by colored boundaries, with the Canadian provinces and the American states each outlined, and the Central American republics are shown in the south. Rivers, lakes and mountain ranges are drawn throughout, with the Great Lakes, Hudson Bay and the Gulf of Mexico clear in the middle of the sheet. At the lower right the Caribbean is named and the Bahamas and the Greater Antilles, including Cuba, Jamaica and Puerto Rico, appear along the edge of the sheet. A small inset is placed at the upper left, below Alaska.
A map of this date shows the continent after the Spanish-American War of 1898 and before the creation of Alberta and Saskatchewan as provinces in 1905, a useful snapshot of the political arrangement of the Americas at the turn of the twentieth century.
