About this piece
A map of North and South America, titled "Amérique, dressée pour la Géographie ... sous la direction de E. Cortambert", published in Paris in 1864 by Boulanger and Legrand. It is an original steel engraving with hand-colored outlines of the countries.
The whole western hemisphere appears on the sheet. North America at the top shows the United States in the years of the Civil War, with Canada, Mexico and Central America, and the Arctic Ocean ("Océan Glacial Arctique") at the head. South America fills the lower right, with its rivers and mountain chains. Two insets fill the lower left: an enlarged "Partie Orientale des États-Unis" with the Great Lakes and Atlantic seaboard, and a small map of the Antilles. The title block at the left carries the name of the geographer Eugène Cortambert, and the Paris imprint of Boulanger and Legrand, "Éditeurs de l'École des Hautes Études", stands at the foot.
The map was made as a school and general atlas sheet, and its coloring distinguishes the countries of both continents.
