About this piece
View of Newburgh, a steel engraving of about 1850 published by J. & F. Tallis of London, Edinburgh and Dublin, whose imprint appears at the foot. The title is lettered "View of Newburgh" beneath the view, inside an ornamental scrollwork border.
The view looks over the roofs of the town and the harbor, where small boats and masts of ships stand at anchor, across the Hudson River to a long, dark ridge of the Highlands on the far shore. In the foreground cattle graze on a rising road, with tall poplars and a leafy tree at the right, a couple of houses, and a figure sitting in the shade. The border holds three small vignettes: a figure presenting in a group at the top, and at the lower left and right two smaller scenes, one of them lettered "The Huguenots landing in America".
Newburgh stands on the west bank of the Hudson in Orange County, New York, opposite the Highlands.
