About this piece
Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of Uncle Tom's Cabin, in a portrait lettered "Frau Harriet Beecher-Stowe", a German-language steel engraving with delicate hand color, published at Hildburghausen by the Bibliographisches Institut around 1850. The sheet is printed on laid paper with nothing on the reverse.
The portrait is a vignette: the sitter is shown from the shoulders up, in three-quarter view, wearing a light veil or draped scarf over her hair. The oval ground behind her is shaded in gray, which sets off the pale blue and white of the headcloth and the warm tone of the face, and the small German caption sits below, with generous blank margins around the whole.
Stowe, an American writer and opponent of slavery, published Uncle Tom's Cabin in 1852, and the book was quickly translated and read across Europe. A German portrait print of this kind reflects how quickly her name became known abroad.
