About this piece
The Americas in 1757, an original map titled "L'Amérique", by Robert de Vaugondy, with outline color applied by hand. The title cartouche at the lower left gives the maker as "Robert de Vaugondy, Géographe ordinaire du Roi", with his further titles, and a scale bar is at the lower right.
The sheet shows North and South America on a single sheet, with the Pacific labeled "Mer du Sud ou Pacifique" and the Atlantic "Mer du Nord". The graticule, the equator and the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn are drawn across the sheet, and territorial divisions are picked out in color: New France and the English colonies on the northern continent, Louisiana, Mexico, the Antilles, and Brazil and the Spanish provinces of South America. A long lettered note stands near the top left.
The sheet summarizes what mid-eighteenth-century French geography knew of the hemisphere, with the far northwest still left uncertain.
