About this piece

New York, a steel engraving of about 1850 published by J. & F. Tallis of London, Edinburgh and Dublin, whose imprint appears at the foot. The title is lettered "New York" in a small cartouche at the lower edge of a tinted, scrolled border.

The city is seen from a hillside across the water, its low skyline of church spires lying along the far shore under a broad cloudy sky. Sailing ships and steamers dot the river and harbor, and a distant headland closes the view at the right. In the foreground a dirt road winds down past a rock at the left, with a man on the road and two figures resting on a fallen log beneath a large tree at the right.

The central picture is enclosed within an ornamental border printed in gray, with leafy scrolls in the corners, and the whole is typical of the decorative English series of American views of the mid nineteenth century.
