About this piece

A river town on a broad bend of a river with a steamboat, an original steel engraving of about 1850, lettered "Wyoming" with a short line of German text beneath it. The Bibliographisches Institut imprint appears in the lower margin.

The view is taken from a rise above the town. At the right a rustic rail fence and a few bushes mark the foreground, and a gnarled tree leans in at the upper right. The town spreads across the flat shore in the middle distance, its roofs and a single church steeple visible, with smoke rising from the riverside. The river sweeps away to the left in a wide curve, with a steamboat under way in the middle of the stream and other craft farther off, and wooded hills close the horizon under a soft sky.

The earlier description names the town as Weston on the Missouri River, but the plate itself is lettered "Wyoming" and the sheet should be checked against its source before the place is stated in print.
